Community Scooter Project

Scooteraid: Poplar Primary School

Once upon a time, in the middle of London, there was an unused and neglected piece of parkland. Also known as Mostyn Gardens.

That was until the school next door decided to unleash its potential. They breathed life back into it and worked tirelessly to transform the area into a place all local children could enjoy.

The result? A unique scooter park in the community.

The new scooter park at Poplar Primary School is believed to be one of the first in the UK. With more than 200 metres of pathways where children can let off steam, keep fit and learn to scoot safely. The school uses it during the day and the community during evenings and weekends. The project won celebrity backing from triathlon stars, the Brownlee brothers, who pledged £1,000.

A marvellous idea

Headteacher Katharine Davies said the idea for the scooter park came after the school’s expansion in 2016. “As part of the work, an access road was created across an underused corner of the adjacent park, Mostyn Gardens. We thought we would really love to do something with that area and create something for pupils and the local community. We noticed that lots of young children came to school on their scooters. That led to the idea of the scooter park. Merton Council kindly agreed that we could go ahead, with the local community being able to enjoy it outside of school hours. "

The design includes undulating pathways to give interest, plus a race track. There's a small ‘village’ area with a pretend garage and shops for role play and imaginary play activities. In May 2017, the school hit their fundraising target, and the scooter park opened in July.

Scooter Aid Scheme

Micro Scooters supported the park by donating 5 Mini Micro Scooters and 4 Maxi Micro Scooters through the ScooterAid scheme. They caused quite a stir when they arrived. We also donated raffle prizes for fundraising, and a ScootSafe Instructor attended the grand opening in July.

We want to give every child the chance to enjoy the fun and feel-good of life on wheels. And we think it’s our responsibility to ensure multiple generations of children can love every Micro. Which is why we created ScooterAid – to rehome used scooters with children who would otherwise miss out.

The premise is simple. Every Micro Scooter is built to last. So when your child has outgrown theirs, send it back to us, and we’ll do the rest. We revamp and rehome your used Micro Scooter with children in need across the UK. Every pre-loved scooter you donate to us is another child we can help.

So far, you’ve helped us bring some scooting feel-good to thousands of children across the country. Together, we can reach thousands more.
