This post is about a great way to get outside and kill a few hours, hunting for treasure, for free.
So the weather has officially turned into Spring and here at Dubs HQ, we think this is the perfect weather for outdoors exploring. But we all know that these wholesome family walks followed by a well earnt GnT can be, well, a right pickle the moment your little hero turns on you.
One minute your precious bundle of joy is skipping towards the country pub you’ve been eyeing up for months, next minute, “I wanna go home”, “I'm bored” or worse… “Carry me”. Well, how about a little Dubs parent-hack…
Gamify the walk.
Hide the fact you are going on a healthy family walk by pretending to be a pirate hunting for lost treasure…. a spy hunting for the next clue… I know, make-believe isn’t for everyone, but stay with me…this is a bonafide, Dubs tested-and-approved way to get fresh air into your kids lungs and entertain them for hours as you meander towards that cozy fireplace. And best of all, it’s on your doorstep and is FREE!
GEOCACHING
“Geo-what?”
Geocaching! It's only... the world's LARGEST treasure hunt - for real.
A geocache or ‘cache’ as us pro’s call it, is a small waterproof treasure box hidden outdoors. Geocachers (you) seek out these hidden goodies guided by the GPS on your smartphone via the free geocaching app. Fire up the app - a map of your location will appear (like a google map), with all the caches nearby. Tap the one you want to “hunt for”, and your phone turns into a digital, modern day treasure map, with directions, clues, and sometimes photos of the location. Some are easy to find, some are more difficult.
“So once you’ve found this treasure box – what's next!?”
Well, once the actual excitement of finding the treasure has subsided (this might take a while) you slowly open the box to reveal your treasure!
Most caches will have a little logbook for you to timestamp your adventure and leave a message. And often (and most exciting), you’ll find strange treasures and trinkets that people have left to swap. If you take a treasure, you should leave another trinket for the next adventurer to swap! So come prepared.
Whether on the side of a sheep-filled hill, a sandy dune, or hidden on a lamppost on a high street, thousands are hidden across the UK! In fact, there are likely hidden caches around the corner from you right now!
So what are you waiting for? Grab that pirate hat, hop on your micro scooter, get Dubs on your kid's feet and go start your first treasure hunt!
