Paris 2024: Team GB on Wheels

Micro UK is incredibly proud to support Team GB again this year with our officially licensed range of Team GB scooters and accessories, especially given that 2024 is an Olympic and Paralympic year.

France's capital city, Paris, will play host to Team GB's Olympic and Paralympic athletes this summer, where they will go head-to-head with the best sportspeople in the world to fight for a podium place in their chosen discipline. Scooting is yet to be an Olympic sport, but plenty of Team GB athletes will be rolling their way around Paris, so let’s take a look at the sports and the competitors who will be challenging for medals on two and four wheels this summer.

Who are the Team GB Track Cycling Team?

As of writing, the Olympic team has yet to be fully announced, but strong performances at February’s National Track Championships in Manchester indicate who may well be gracing the track, and hopefully the podium, in Paris.

17-year-old Welsh schoolboy Sam Fisher stunned with two wins at the National Champs and may well have put his hat in the ring for a spot in Team GB in Paris. At the opposite end of the scale, experience-wise, two-time team sprint world medallist Lauren Bell is fighting for a place in both the Individual and Team Sprints and the Kierin after finishing in the top spot at the Nationals.

In Para-Cycling, five-time Paralympic cycling champion Jody Cundy successfully transitioned back to the track from the sequins and glamour of Strictly Come Dancing and firmly set his sights on more Paralympic medals.

BMX Freestyle

Who are the Team GB BMX Freestyle Team?

As with track cycling, the BMX riders have yet to finish their qualifying sessions for the Olympic Team. But as the current world champion, Kieran Reilly has already booked his place. A rare Geordie who sought out the skatepark rather than the football pitch, Reilly came home from last year’s World Championships in Glasgow with the gold and will head to Paris as the one to watch! Current Olympic Bronze medallist Declan Brooks is also a contender and would love to be in Paris to improve his 2020 performance from Tokyo. The ex-Cirque de Soleil performer struck Bronze again recently in the European championships. Let’s hope both make Team GB for Paris.

Skateboarding

Where and when are the Skateboarding events for the 2024 Olympics?

Paris 2024 Dates for competition: 27-28 July and 6-7 August

Who are the Team GB Skateboarding Team?

At age 13, Sky Brown became Team GB's youngest-ever medallist when she won Bronze in the Tokyo Park Skateboarding competition. In 2024, she had hoped to make history again by becoming the first Team GB athlete in over a century to compete in two sports at the Summer Olympics. As the current world number 3 in skateboarding, her qualification in this discipline seems a shoo-in. Still, qualification for surfing was less assured as she needed a top 16 finish at the ISA World Surfing Games to make Team GB – unfortunately, it was a step too far for the 15-year-old, and she missed qualification. Even if Sky had qualified, the logistics of competing in two disciplines would not have been easy. In theory, she could have competed in both competitions in Paris, but it would have entailed her making a 10,000-mile dash from Tahiti, where the Olympic surfing competition is being held, to La Concorde's Urban Park in Paris for the Skateboarding! It’s now game-on for the double in 2028 when the games will be held in Los Angeles, at which time Sky will still only be 20 years old!

One of the few sports that have selected their Olympic team members already, Alex Yee and Beth Cotter, will be heading to Paris confidently. Cotter and Yee both won their respective Olympic test events in Paris in 2023, and Cotter will go into the race as the reigning world champion. Yee would love to exceed his tally of Gold and Silver from Tokyo with double gold in Paris 2024.

Wheelchair basketball

Both the women’s and men’s teams have qualified for Paris 2024. In 2023, the Men's team won Silver at the European Championships and, having won Bronze at the previous two Paralympic Games, will be hunting for a higher podium position this time. Team GB's women's wheelchair basketball team achieved their highest placing in the Paralympics at the Rio Games in 2016 when they finished 4th and reached the final at last year’s European Championships. In 2024, the women’s team won the Osaka cup, meaning that Sophie Caragill and her team will go into the Games confident.

Alfie and partner Gordon Reid have no intention of slowing down. With the most recent of these titles being won at the 2024 Australian Open, it is full steam ahead to Paris 2024. Alfie ended 2023 as the world no.1 singles player, has won 3 silver medals in previous Paralympic games, was shortlisted for Sports Personality of the Year 2023 and was also awarded an OBE in 2023 – will Paralympic gold be the cherry on top in 2024?
