We are delighted to be partnering with Transport for London (TfL) on a year-long partnership focussed around the STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe) programme, designed to encourage families to consider active modes of transport, such as push scooters, on the school run.
In partnership with TfL we have created a series of activity cards that schools will be able to complete, along with other active travel activities including art competitions and presentations as part of the Youth Travel Ambassadors programme.
When schools complete the Micro Scooters/TfL activities they will be in with the chance of winning a range of Micro Scooters prizes including fleets of push scooters for schools, special Micro Scooters Scoot Safe sessions that will help teach children to scoot safely, and Micro Scooters accessories including water bottles, bells and lights so children can stay safe and hydrated on the active school run.
There are currently more than 700 London primary schools enrolled on the TfL STARS schools accreditation scheme, which inspires young Londoners to think differently about travel and commit to more active, safe and sustainable modes. Each year STARS schools replace 13 million miles worth of car journeys with walking, cycling and scooting. Their partnership with us aims to encourage even more children to use push scooters (not electric scooters) to get to and from school.
Christina Calderato, TfL’s Head of Transport Strategy & Planning, said: “For over a decade TfL’s STARS programme has been helping young people travel to school safely and sustainably by championing walking, scooting and cycling. Partnering with Micro Scooters is a great opportunity for us to encourage the next generation of young Londoners to think about the importance of active travel and make a real difference to our city.”
Ben Gibson, Managing Director at Micro Scooters UK: “We are thrilled to be working with TfL on its brilliant STARS initiative. Micro Scooters was founded in London by two mums who were looking for an easier, greener, quicker more convenient way to do the school run with their children. Since then our scooters have revolutionised the way families in London and the UK do the school run. The TfL STARS scheme gives school communities an opportunity to move in a safer, greener way. We are delighted that we can help support this scheme and improve school run journeys for children, parents, teachers and local residents.”
While the STARS activity cards will be available on STARS website soon, the competition will be kicking off in January 2021, giving any non-registered schools the opportunity to sign up and participate in the activities as well as to be in with the chance of winning prizes.
Any London school can create an account and register to join TfL’s STARS programme at https://stars.tfl.gov.uk/
TfL continues to work closely with local boroughs to rapidly create space for walking across the city through the Streetspace for London plan, as London recovers from the coronavirus pandemic. This programme also includes new School Streets, where vehicle access is restricted outside a school during drop off and pick up times, making active journeys to school safer and easier.
