Not sure which scooter to choose for your six-year-old? This guide will talk you through the options, the pros and cons of each and what to look out for when buying a scooter for your six-year-old.
At age 6 there are two broad choices of scooter you will be considering, namely:
2 wheeled scooters
3 wheeled scooters
Aside from the difference in wheels the main differences between two-wheeled and three-wheeled scooters for six-year-olds are as follows:
2 wheeled scooters;
1. Have handlebars your child must turn in the direction they want to go. Just like steering on a bike
2. Require children to balance
3. Are foldable allowing for easy storage or transportation
3 wheeled scooters;
1. Use lean to steer scooting i.e. children lean their body in the direction they want to go – rather than turn the handlebars
2. Do not require a child to balance – the 3 wheels does it for them
3. Are not foldable – but the handlebar can be removed from the base allowing them to be easily stored or transported.
As a general rule of thumb whether you choose a 2 wheeled scooter or 3 wheeled scooter the size of the scooter for a six-year-old should follow be as follows: The top of the handlebars should sit just above your child’s belly button. This creates the perfect scooting stance and helps you to assess which size scooter is right for a six-year-old.
There are 4 choices when choosing a Micro scooter for a six-year-old. These are:
1. Micro Sprite
2. Micro Cruiser
3. Maxi Micro
4. Micro Chilli Stunt scooter

The featherweight 2 wheeler. A perfect first 2 wheeled scooter for six year olds. Steers like a bike i.e you turn the handlebars in the direction you want to go. Foldable. The Sprite will last your child from ages 5-12. It comes in a variety of colours and finishes and also has the option of light up wheels.

Maxi Micro for six-year-olds
The Maxi Micro is a three wheeled scooter suitable for ages 5-12.
Unlike the Sprite and Cruiser scooters a child leans in the direction they want to go rather than turn the handlebars. Kids easily pick up this lean to steer style of scooting making for an intuitive, easy ride.
The Maxi Micro has an adjustable handlebar, extra grippy footplate and strong rear brake. Great for kids who want to experience the thrill of scooting in an easy and safe way.
Stunt scooters for six-year-olds
Stunt scooters for six-year-olds are a great choice if your child wants to go to the skate park or wants to perform tricks and stunts.
Unlike the other scooters in this group Micro and Chilli stunt scooters have a non-foldable handlebar. Instead the handlebar is a one-piece construction. This is to ensure the scooter is as strong as it can be when its jumped on or ridden in the skate park.
All Micro and Chilli stunt scooters have a robust brake and differing handlebar widths to suit each and every rider. Perfect for those burgeoning stunt riders who want to be stars of the skatepark.
In recent times the popularity of electric scooters have soared. However, at the time of writing (2022) electric scooters for kids and adults are illegal to be ridden anywhere but on private property.
If your child is new to scooting at the age of 6, we would recommend the following scooters
All three of these scooters have 3 wheels which means your child does not have to learn to balance. The steering is intuitive and easy to pick up I.e. a child leans their body in the direction they want to go. All come with a strong rear brake and adjustable handlebar meaning your child will be in total control and safe when riding. It also means the scooter will grow with your child – lasting in this case until they are 12.
If your child has had a scooter before then at the age of 6 we would recommend the following scooters
Both of these scooters have 2 wheels which means your child turns the handlebars in the direction they want to go – just like riding a bike. This means your child has to balance on the scooter. These scooters are better suited to children who have good balance skills, perhaps they already ride a bike or have had a scooter in the past.
There are a huge range of stunt scooters for six-year-olds. We recommend the following:
All four of these scooters are perfectly suited stunt scooters for six-year-olds. The handlebar height of each suit children who’s maximum height is 170cm. It means the top of the handlebars will sit just above the belly button – the perfect stance for stunt scooter riding.
All of these scooters have a strong rear brake allowing your child to stay in total control when performing jumps, stunts, tricks or going over ramps. Each also have small wheels making it easier to perform jumps. Finally, each and every one of these scooters have a narrow handlebar width allowing your child to be in total control when riding.
