Scooting Pioneers

A man who likes to ask questions
Micro was created by Wim Ouboter – a man who likes to ask questions. Why can’t getting around our cities be both practical and fun? Why can’t urban mobility be good for people and good for our planet? Why can’t easy be affordable?
Wim’s journey to answer these questions has been a journey of ideas, experimentation and refusing to take no for an answer. So far he has helped to transform the way toddlers enjoy their first taste of independence, the way millions of children get to school and the way commuters get to work. From scooters to bikes to electric cars.
Time-saving. Planet-protecting. Smile-inducing. Wim is on a mission to help us all move better.

A history of scooters
Scooters may seem like a modern invention, but their earliest forms date as far back as the early 1900s – where roller skate wheels were attached to wooden decks.
The first adult motorised scooter – the Autoped – was patented in 1916 and even counts Emilia Earhart as one of its early fans.
Early scooters tended to be heavy, bumpy and prone to issues like the wooden deck rotting. Their resurgence was turbocharged by our very own Wim Ouboter in 1996 when he invented the world’s first folding aluminium scooter. Lightweight, portable and space-saving, it transformed how scooters would be perceived.
Three years later, in 1996, Wim went a step further – inventing the world’s first three-wheeled scooter – the scooter that would go on to transform how millions of children get around.

Problem-solvers at heart
Micro began with solving an everyday problem. How to quickly and easily travel a distance that is too short to drive, but too long to walk? Since then we’ve continued to take everyday problems and turn them into our next Micro mission.
How to help toddlers enjoy their first taste of independence – safely and in a way that helps them build balance and coordination? How to help urban commuters cover the distances between the train station and their office – with minimum hassle and maximum style? How to transform the school run from a daily grind to the best possible start to the day?
Problem-solving is what sparks our creativity and fires our minds. It’s what makes Micro Micro.
